It is now the age where brands are producing more high-end outdoor equipment that has been designed both by women, for women. In doing so they can explore and be more adventurous whilst feeling comfortable and trusting in the equipment that they have. One of those pioneers is KEEN footwear. They have recently released the Terradora hiking boot for Summer 2017. This boot is designed not only to be worn in the high mountains but also on your everyday commute.
KEEN is an American clothing, shoe, and bag manufacturing company based in Portland, Oregon. KEEN’s stated purpose is to “create original and versatile products, improve lives, and inspire outdoor adventure.” Founded in 2003 by Martin Keen and Rory Fuerst, KEEN products are now available in retail locations throughout the United States, and are distributed worldwide.
The KEEN Terradora boot comes both in a high and low depending on the style you desire. The high boot has that extra ankle support and fits like a glove. The plus side to this boot is I didn’t need to wear them in. After a first try and walkabout they felt extremely comfortable. I enjoy the comfortable fit and also how the shoes tie up to make your ankle feel secure. I pretty much spent all of my time in these shoes whilst in Canada and twice after a hike in both colder snowy terrain and normal hiking terrain did get blisters on the back of my ankles. This was due to a lot of heel slip, so I suggest learning some shoe knots that could help you with this problem or just spend more time in the day re-adjusting your shoe knots. The one feature that I didn’t like was the stitching on the inner heel, which most likely played a part in giving me blisters.
The plus side to these boots was the fit. I have much wider feet and it can be very difficult to find a boot that accommodates this. KEEN didn’t fail to impress! These boots were very accommodating. Within the boot is also a specially designed cushion panel which takes pressure off of the achilles.
The Terradora had a special breathable waterproof membrane. This is perfect for when you’re out hiking the trails and you want to keep your feet stay cool and well ventilated. It is also great for if you walk through shallow water or splash in a puddle as the boots with keep your feet lovely and dry. For me all of us was a godsend as nobody likes the feel of wet feet in boots! I tested this out in various terrains from normal hiking trails to standing on a glacier and also walking through small amounts of water.
For those who may wear these quite often and suffer from smelly boots, KEEN has a built in Clearsport NXT for natural odor control. After the two weeks of almost constant wear they have started to emit a small scent, however it is not overly powerful and I am sure with some tender love and care at home all will be fine.
With a lightweight sole, hiking in the Terradora has been a dream. Compared to much heavier weighted boots and specially designed for the summer months, this is definitely a boot that you will want to wear as it does take the strain off of your feet. The sole had a great grip on the many surfaces that I tested them out on – especially the icy glacier and also some more boggy and muddy areas of land.
The Terradora hiking boot comes in various colours – Dark Purple, Silver birch, Astral Aura, Bungee cord, Gargoyle, Raven.

There is no doubt that this summer the KEEN Terradora hiking boot is definitely the one to buy for summer 2017. It has had raving reviews across the globe and has recently won ‘Best Shoes’ at the Op Pad Outdoor Awards! They are a boot that not only is comfortable on the slower hiking trails of Canada but also the fast paced environment of city life. They are the most comfortable boot that i have ever owned but also look great.
For me it is satisfying to see more and more brands like KEEN heading the way in understanding that outdoor women are looking for outdoor shoes that are comfortable, look good and are durable in more ways than one. And on the plus side they also care about protecting the environment and through their KEEN effect, they have granted $10,000 to nonprofit organisations across the globe, who are doing their bit for the environment.
